Understanding Standard Visitation in Oklahoma

Oklahoma courts are guided by a “standard visitation” framework rooted in Title 43 of the Oklahoma Statutes. In place since 1990, this framework requires a specified minimum amount of parenting time for the noncustodial parent, provided it serves the child’s best interests. In practice, courts typically award more than that minimum. The most common baseline includes alternating weekends with the noncustodial parent plus a midweek overnight.

How much parenting time a parent receives can also affect child support. When a noncustodial parent exercises 121 or more overnights annually, Oklahoma’s child support guidelines may allow for a shared parenting adjustment to the calculation.

Making a Child Visitation Schedule

The visitation schedule determines which parent has the right to be with their child on any given day. When both parents and their attorneys can reach an agreement, a judge will generally approve the written schedule, rejecting it only if it isn’t in the child’s best interests.

Not all parents can agree on a custody arrangement. When that happens, both sides present their proposed schedules to the judge and make the case for why theirs serves the child best.

In contested cases, specificity matters. Comprehensive parenting plans address regular weekdays and weekends, holidays, school breaks, summers, and special occasions, leaving as little ambiguity as possible. Oklahoma County courts may also encourage mediation before a contested hearing.

Types of Parenting Time Arrangements in Oklahoma

Oklahoma recognizes several parenting time structures beyond the standard alternating-weekend baseline. The right arrangement depends on the parents’ proximity, work schedules, and ability to cooperate.

• Alternating weekends with a midweek overnight: The most common baseline award for noncustodial parents.
• Alternating-week schedules: Each parent has the children for a full week at a time, providing stability and maximizing parenting time for both.
• 2-2-3 and 3-4-4-3 schedules: Children rotate between parents every few days, suited to parents who live close together and can coordinate frequently.
• Supervised visitation: Ordered when the court has safety concerns about a parent. A neutral third party must be present during visits, though this arrangement can be temporary while a parent addresses the court’s concerns.
• Virtual visitation: Video calls and similar contact can supplement in-person parenting time, particularly when one parent lives at a distance.
• Long-distance parenting plans: When parents live far apart, frequent short visits are replaced with extended summer, holiday, and school-break time.

Holiday schedules typically supersede the regular weekend rotation, with parents alternating major holidays on even and odd years. Because the structure of a parenting time schedule can affect child support once the noncustodial parent reaches the 121-overnight threshold, getting the arrangement right matters both relationally and financially.
